Hello I’m Kayla, 25 years old, I’m originally from South Carolina, but moved to Virginia when I joined the Navy in 2008 and haven’t left yet. I have three boys Carson (5), Evan (4), and Charleston (1).
Despite having three offspring I’ve only been baby wearing for a little under two years. I was pregnant with my third and my husband (also Navy) transferred back to sea duty, I realized I needed something to hold my baby in so I would be able to chase my runner (Evan) and not leave the baby behind in a stroller. I also decided a couple months later to jump in the hiking community where I learned so much more about baby wearing and really “dove” into the babywearing community and all its different options.
Babywearing has given me the confidence as a mom of three to get out there. It has really made my life easier and I feel like I have no limits when it comes to being active in my community. I often joke that I will wear my youngest to college.
My favorite carrier would have to be Tula. I’ve had various brands throughout my journey in baby wearing but Tula has given me the most comfort in the terms of my growing boys. I literally can carry my 46lb four year old in my toddler Tula and feel nothing. I’m also partial to my Olives and Applesauce baby carrier. It has infant insert in it which was super convenient when he was little.
I feel like my biggest babywearing accomplishment is spreading the love. I have extra carriers that I loan out on my hikes, at soccer practice, or to my everyday friends.
My biggest struggle is by far the judgement that comes with it. “Isn’t he a little big to be in there?” “He’s crying because you’re hurting him in that contraption” “Why don’t you just let me take him down”. I try to ignore the ignorance but it’s hard to be judged.
I want others to know that baby wearing is awesome. It doesn’t matter what you wear them in just hold them close. They won’t be little forever.
