This past Saturday, August 3rd, was The Big Latch On with events in Portsmouth & Newport News. Babywearing International of Hampton Roads had volunteers at both locations as representatives of our organization and as participants in babywearing fashion shows.
With 107 breastfeeding mothers, Portsmouth’s Big Latch On was a big success. BWI of HR was set up just under the stage at Portsmouth City Park where several of our VBEs & members came out to represent BWI of Hampton Roads. We had opportunities to chat one on one with several caregivers about choosing carriers, how to nurse in them, and our upcoming August meeting.
The fashion show was a hit! Several moms and dads walked to show off carriers in the lending library and special personal carriers. Thanks to Sarah M’s family, we were even able to present a babywearing family! There were quite a few local businesses who came out to show support from chiropractic care to doula services and photography. Amazing goodie bags were given with several samples and every nursing mom received a nursing pillow, changing pad and nursing cover all in one!
The Big Latch On in Newport News was hosted by Breastfeeding Mamas and took place inside the Midtown Community Center. There were babywearers everywhere. Many of them were new to Babywearing International of Hampton Roads and were excited to learn about our local chatter group & the monthly meetings that will start in September on the Peninsula (Second Saturday every month).
The fashion show showcased several different styles of carriers, from DIY wraps to mei tais to soft structured carriers. We had both moms & dads wearing their babies & toddlers and even one of our volunteer’s children wearing her doll for the show.
